In the photo above, we are visiting with friends. The flag is an echo of the events of September 11, 2001.

I like the picture of old high school friends below because I remember most of these people from 1976 and 1977. I saw them at age 17, and then they reappeared 23 years later. Their faces did not evolve slowly. Instead they flashed from age 17 to 41 in a single moment, without confusing intermediate stages. And so I see each of them as two overlapping and utterly clear images, youth and middle age in a single image.

Pictured, left to right are Jeff Gothard and Liz Bear (both Hollywood High School, 1978), Leora Troper (Beverly Hills High School, 1981) and Miles Hochstein (Hollywood High School 1977), Brad Roberts (The Roeper School, Detroit, 1979) and (Rabbi) Alexis Harmon Roberts (Hollywood High School, 1978) and Thair Peterson (Hollywood High School, 1977, holding a picture of his family) and Assorted Beloved Children. (Photo by Emily, age 9.)

It turns out that we went to high school with very nice people, and that two decades was about enough time to recover from the whole experience and enjoy each other's company on a warm summer day at Jeff and Liz's home in Orange County.

What?! Please do not tell me you haven't scanned your face yet.

I think this looks like a death mask.

Abba, can we go home yet?
