Provenance: These photos were taken in the apartment I occupied during the 1993-1994 academic year with the guy who later became my brother in law, Jonathan Troper. There is an automatically inscribed date on the photo (" '93 12 31"). In addition, the postmark on the envelope in which these were sent to me, and stored, is January 26, 1994, shortly after that date. Furthermore the person who took the pictures is the kind of person who would keep the date on her camera set accurately. I conclude that the 1993 date of 12-31 is exact, and this photo qualifies as my official 1993 photo, taken on the last day of 1993.)

On the last day of 1993 an old girlfriend snapped these shots of me in the apartment I shared with my future brother-in-law in west Los Angeles.

The colors are all real.

At this time my doctoral dissertation on genocide was almost complete.

In that opus I explored the international causes of genocide, and its roots in competition between states.
