Documented Life     An Autodocumentary     Miles Hochstein

Above: With my Aunt Elenore Lester (b ca 1920, d. ca early 1990s) in 1989 or 1990. I miss her. There are some people one can't help wishing could know how it is going now. (Elenore, its much better now.).

In the winter of 1988-1989, as my involvement with traditional Judaism declined, I allowed my beard to grow, for a while. I didn't need to worry that people would think I was into some kind of Orthodox Jewish thing anymore, because I clearly wasn't. (Date on back of photo is 1/89) I did like the way I looked with that beard a lot.

Above: Later I tried shaving too. On the back, in the mid-90's, I wrote "circa 1987 to 1990."

I don't think I knew what I was doing in this year. I was a graduate student, taking courses, but I can't remember much from this period, except a general feeling of directionlessness and depression that permeated everything.

Above: In May 1989 I got a new passport. This is the only picture with a certain date on this page. The others are circa 1988-1991.

In the summer of 1989 I journeyed back to Israel for a few weeks to do some library research.

In 1989 I was far from healed from all from my experiences in Israel a few years earlier, and even though I did some good research in the Ben Gurion archives, I was still basically a traumatized and unhappy person, and the trip was very stressful for me.

I seem to recall that I cut the beard for the trip. However, it might have been only after the summer of 1989 that I grew the beard. It is a question that could interest only me, but it does interest me, in a very minor sort of way.
